Definition: Personal Assistance is anything done at the direction of the
person with a disability that he or she would do for themselves were it not
for the disability. Personal control is critical, so that the PAS are
truly flexible, and reflect real self-determination

Our programs allow us to assist individuals in achieving
employment goals, assist individuals in being able to remain living in their
own homes and provide greatly needed respite for the primary caregivers of
some individuals. The services we have been able to provide include
on-the-job training, teaching community awareness and linking with peers,
providing transportation, assisting in increasing communication skills, as
well as teaching or assisting with basic self care, health maintenance,
homemaking and home maintenance and respite.
PAS POOL
The BWCIL recognizes that
each Personal Assistant user is an individual and has individual needs and
wants, likes and dislikes. Our person centered philosophy has sent us
on a search to find the right person to work with each individual. We
also recognize that it is impossible to expect providers to be able to serve
all consumers with all types of needs and provide quality services all of
the time. Therefore, we are developing PAS POOL, a provider pool from
which BWCIL PA users can select a provider which will be right for him or
her. The PA Services Program at The BWCIL continues to evolve.
We continue to provide services under the Habilitative/Supports Wavier,
Michigan Commission for the Blind, as well as the Area Agency on Aging Home
Services Program, Community Care Management Program and the Medicaid Waiver
Program
PAS Advocacy
The local PAS Advocacy
group which is coordinated by BWCIL, is one of the 12 grassroots coalitions
around the state of Michigan. These groups, in collaboration with
Michigan Association of Centers for Independent Living, Michigan Disability
Rights Coalition, and the State-Wide Independent Living Council make
up the PAS systems change project. For information on activities going
on at the local and state level, or to get involved, please call the BWCIL
at 1-800-527-2167 or (810)987-9337.
